Vista Farmers Market 30th Birthday Celebration

“The Vista Farmers Market created the model that inspired others,” says Mark Wall, market manager, “and now this market is celebrating three decades of helping local farmers and building community.” The every-Saturday market will feature two live bands and street performers (think stilt-walkers, fire-eaters, jugglers) during its 30th anniversary party on Saturday September 24th. As one of the first 25 farmers markets… in the state (there are now 729) the Vista Farmers Market is larger than ever . . . with over 90 farmers, food-makers, craftspeople, and marketers. Forty-five real farmers are represented at the market each week, along with food-makers selling a large variety of juices, dips, sauces, breads, dog treats, cakes, cookies, brownies, salsa, cheese, meats, and various treats. “This market changes every week, as farm produce comes into, and goes out of, season,” according to Wall, “and food entrepreneurs try out new items with our 2,000 weekly customers.”
The Vista Farmers Market operates every Saturday, year-round,

Slow Food San Diego – Glean Day – Share the Harvest

SFSD is organizing community gleaning groups in the towns of Vista, Carlsbad, Oceanside, San Marcos, Escondido, and Poway, connecting with local farmers and backyard gardeners to help collect their excess produce and donate to the local food bank in North County. Everyone will meet after a “day of gleaning” at the collectoin location, Stone Brewing Company, at 5 PM, to consolidate and distribute. Slow Food San Diego is turning foster teens into farmers. The 2005 annual August fundraiser at Orfila Vineyard launched a sustainable garden headed by board member Scott Murray who is a farmer and teacher at San Pasqual Academy. Slow Food funds were matched by various other local donors. The project, which located on Academy grounds, includes orchards and groves. It is expected to expand to 120-acres and plans are to supply local area restaurants.
San Pasqual Academy is an alternative residential and education option for San Diego County foster teens. Slow Food San Diego is committed to awakening young people to the enjoyment and health benefits of wholesome food. Scott replaced their break junk food with wholesome snacks. At first, kids were skeptical about this new venture; now, they want to know how to get into this cool class. It shows a little love can bring new life back into both the land and the teens who are helping to revive it. The sustainable farm also teaches them about nutrition, ecologically sound food production and gives them a sense of positive accomplishment through land stewardship.
